Fun fact! The Anthurium Clarinervium produces a unique flower called a spadix, which is particularly special because it contains both male and female parts. To prevent self-pollination, the female parts mature first, becoming receptive before the male parts release pollen. Once the female parts are no longer receptive, the male parts begin their pollen production, ensuring that self-pollination doesn’t occur. Pretty fascinating!

Anthurium Clarinervium

Discovered in the 1950s in the tropical rainforests of southern Mexico, the Anthurium Clarinervium must have instantly captivated the botanists who found it with its impressive appearance. In the wild, this plant is a natural epiphyte, preferring to grow on other plants rather than in soil. But don't worry, this relationship is solely friendship based, the Anthurium is more than capable of finding its own nutrients and water and does not take advantage of the plant it is growing on top of. The Clarinervium captures water with its aerial roots and absorbs nutrients from the dead leaves and animal faeces captured in the water. Growing on top of other plants also gives it the advantage of capturing more light.

Care guide

While the Anthurium Clarinervium does have some specific care needs to keep it happy, healthy, and thriving, it's not overly demanding. Here's a handy care guide to ensure your Clarinervium flourishes:

Light

The Anthurium Clarinervium thrives in bright, indirect light. Too much direct sunlight can cause leaf scorching, so it's important to place it in a spot where it receives filtered light. A north or west-facing windowsill is ideal, or you can place it a few metres away from a sunnier window with a sheer curtain to diffuse the light.

Soil Mix

As an epiphyte, the Anthurium Clarinervium prefers a well-draining, chunky potting mix, rich in organic materials. We recommend using our specially formulated epiphyte mix kit to recreate make it super comfortable and ensure it thrives within your urban jungle!

Water

Water your Anthurium Clarinervium when the top few centimetres of soil feel dry. Always check the moisture level before watering to avoid root rot, as the fleshy roots are particularly susceptible. Ensuring excellent drainage is key to preventing overwatering issues.

Expert tip! You can alter watering with top and bottom watering. With bottom watering, you place the Anthurium in a bowl of lukewarm water in its nursery pot. You give the plant 10-15 minutes to soak up as much water as it needs and let the excess drain in the sink. Now your plant is fully watered! Just make sure to alter it with top watering, to prevent salt build-up in the soil.

Temperature and Humidity

This tropical beauty loves warm, humid environments. Aim to keep the temperature between 16-24°C, with higher humidity levels around 70% being ideal. A humidifier or greenhouse setup can help maintain the perfect conditions for your Anthurium Clarinervium.

Fun fact! The Anthurium Clarinervium is a rather slow grower, so if it's growing you're taking excellent care of your green friend! We promise you the leaves are worth the wait.

Propagating

If you’re a proud plant parent of an Anthurium Clarinervium, you might be interested in propagating it to share its beauty or expand your collection. Here’s how to do it through division, find out more below.

Step 1

Ensure your Anthurium is healthy, with no recent issues like pests, yellowing leaves, or root rot. Propagation by division is only possible if your plant has multiple stems emerging from the pot.

Step 2

Carefully remove your Clarinervium from its pot and gently shake off the soil. Tease apart the roots to separate the stems, keeping most of the roots intact. If some roots are shared between divisions, use clean shears to carefully cut them.

Step 3

Once separated, repot each division into its own pot using a suitable epiphyte mix. Continue to care for them as you would your original plant.
