Begonia (Polka Dot Plant) varieties for sale
With an impressive number of over 1,600 species and almost as many hybrids, the Begonia family is certainly a vast and diverse one. Begonias can be divided into four types: Wax, Tuberous, Cane, and Rhizomatous.
Wax and Tuberous Begonias
Wax begonias, also known as fibrous begonias, and tuberous begonias are often grown in garden beds. They can also have small flowers and are generally bought more for their flowers than their foliage. The Begonia Semperflorens or Begonia Dragon Wing is a good example of these types of Begonias.
Cane Begonias
Commonly known as Polka Dot Begonias, such as the Begonia Maculata, Begonia Tamaya, and Begonia Corallina. They have long, almost bamboo-like stems and slim, droplet- and wing-shaped leaves that point downward. They can produce clusters of small white, pink, or red flowers, but the real stars are their leaves, which come in various colors and are often speckled with silver.
Rhizomatous Begonias
These are called rhizomatous because they grow from a stem called a rhizome. They have the most striking leaves in terms of color, shape, and texture. Many feature fuzzy, variegated leaves in shades ranging from light pink to deep purple and from yellow to dark green. Popular Rex Begonias are technically a subgroup of the rhizomatous category, but they are often grouped separately due to their challenging growth. Rex means "king" in Latin, a fitting name (we think) for this group with the largest, most extravagant leaves!
Begonia care
Begonias are not overly delicate, which makes them an intermediate-level plant. Most Begonias prefer indirect light. If you notice the leaves scorching, your Begonia is receiving too much sun. Move your plant to a less sunny spot. They are somewhat sensitive to root rot, so use an airy potting mix with a bit of gravel at the bottom and ensure the soil stays slightly moist.
