No houseplant collection is complete without a few Philodendrons here and there. In this blog, we’ll dive into the world of Philodendrons and their most wanted varieties. From the sweet Pink Princess to even more precious varieties like the Verrucosum: there is so much variety that it can be hard to choose your favourite!

We did some research and asked our community to help us out. We received many suggestions of a great diversity of varieties. Although they are all super beautiful, only some of them can be the most wanted. We proudly present the top 10 most wanted Philodendron plants, selected by our lovely PLNTScommunity!

1. Philodendron Gloriosum

Let’s start our top 10 favourite and most wanted Philodendrons with the beautiful Philodendron Gloriosum. Besides being a beauty, she’s also a rare plant! Its heart-shaped, dark green leaves aren't just gorgeous to look at, they're velvety to the touch. The climbing plant is known to crawl, so you'll want to place it somewhere with room to spread.

2. Philodendron Melanochrysum

Runner up.. The Philodendron Melanochrysum! This rare plant is sometimes referred to as the Black Gold Philodendron because of the beautiful gold accents on her leaves. Her leaves, which start out like a fleshy pink before turning almost black with age, get bigger and bigger as she gets taller, so you can enjoy them even more! Isn’t she a true eye-catcher?

3. Philodendron Verrucosum

The third place goes to the gorgeous Philodendron Verrucosum. Once you’ve seen her, you get why she earned the third spot on this list! The Philodendron Verrucosum is a beautiful plant that has beautiful dark green veined leaves with hairy stems. This beauty also belongs to the group of rare plants, so if you want to add a rarity to your indoor jungle: she’s the perfect addition!

4. Philodendron McDowell

You can't walk past this beauty without looking, because wow, what gigantic beautiful leaves this Philodendron McDowell has! The McDowell is a Gloriosum x Pastazanum hybrid, therefore they are hard to keep apart from each other. The only differences, for example more prominent white lines, can be spotted on their stems.

5. Philodendron Pink Princess

Get ready for PPP: Philodendron Pink Princess! She owes her nickname from her foliage; the leaves are coloured with pink and a warm, dark chocolate brown. Also the stems are a deep, dark red, which gives her a mysterious look. This colourful baby is a true addition to every indoor jungle!

6. Philodendron Florida Green

The Philodendron Florida Green really lives up to her name: this plant is a real beauty! She has beautifully shaped leaves. It is super interesting to see how these leaves develop from young to adult. The young leaves start out a little quirky and the adult leaves have a deeply incised shape, which makes this plant eccentric! Isn't she picture perfect?

7. Philodendron Splendid

Lucky number seven! The Philodendron Splendid might look a bit familiar, and that’s because she is a hybrid between two Philodendrons that we are already in love with! This is the Philodendron Splendid and she is the offspring of the Verrucosum and the Melanochrysum. The leaves are shaped like the Verrucosum, but the way the plant grows is similar to the Melanochrysum, how cool is that!?

8. Philodendron Florida Ghost

The Philodendron Florida Ghost is one of the rarer cultivars of Philodendron, and will dominate any space you put her in. She lives up to her ghostly nickname thanks to her fantastic white leaves, but don’t be scared- she’s an easy-going guest and a real pleasure to look at!

How do you take care of these Philodendron variaties?

Light

The first step is to find the perfect location. This would be where your Philodendron can receive lots of bright indirect light, without any harsh midday sunrays. These can damage the pretty foliage of your Philodendron and that would be a petty.

Temperature and humidity

You can also raise the humidity, up yo 60%. Your Philodendron is a tropical beauty afterall and grows best in conditions similair to their origins. That is also the reason why your Philodendron would like to be kept in a temperature range from 19-29°C.

Soil

Next up is the soil, this should be rich in organic materials that are able to drain excess water and retain moisture. We have put all the needed substrates in our aroid potting mix kit. Which we would say works best for your Philodendron with the following ratio's: 60% soil, 15% tree bark, 10% coco fibre, 10% active charcoal and 5% Perlite.

Those are the basics to provide excelent care for your Philodendrons. If you would like to know more, you can visit our Philodendron care guide.
