Who doesn’t love taking cuttings? It is a fun way to propagate your plants and fill your home with even more greenery. And the best part? Watching your cuttings slowly grow into mature plants! How amazing is it to see your little green babies thrive? In this blog, I will share tips to give your cuttings the best start so they can thrive and grow beautifully this spring!
When is the perfect time to take cuttings?
Planning to take cuttings from your houseplants? Spring is the time! With perfect temperatures, plants in their peak growth phase, and a higher chance of success, it is the season to let your green babies thrive. They root faster and grow like crazy! So, spring is your best friend for plant cuttings, but always check the specific timing for your plant type.
Tips to boost your cuttings’ growth
To give your cuttings the best start, there are a few handy tools and tips you can use to make sure they root quickly and grow strong!
- Grab your sharpest knife or pruning shears (we recommend the Susan Pruning Shears!) to make clean cuts – this keeps your plant happy and healthy! And don't forget to disinfect your tools, so you don’t accidentally pass on any plant bugs.

- Rooting powder is a game-changer! It boosts root growth and prevents mould and bacteria. Just dip the cut end into the powder before planting it in the soil – trust us, it works wonders!
- To really give your cuttings a head start, keep the humidity high. Place them in a clear plastic bag or mini greenhouse to trap moisture and encourage those roots to grow.
- And here is the golden tip: healthy cuttings = happy roots! Choose a strong, healthy plant for your cuttings. A healthy start means the best chance for success!
Rooting in water or soil?
First things first: gather your cutting! The method you use depends on the plant family, so keep that in mind. After that, you have got a couple of options for rooting. Both work great, so it is all about what feels right for you!
Water Method: Pop your cutting in a vase or jar with water. The best part? You get to watch those roots grow! Just remember to change the water regularly to avoid algae and rot.
Soil Method: Stick your cutting directly into the soil. A well-balanced mix of substrates gives the perfect combo of moisture and air, which roots absolutely love.
Whichever method you pick, patience is key! Cuttings can take a little time to settle in, so don’t get discouraged if they don’t start growing right away. With the right care, your baby plants will eventually grow their own roots.
Potting mix and substrates: what do you really need?
The right potting mix really makes all the difference. You want it to be well-draining, so your cutting doesn’t drown in water. Here are a few tips for choosing the right substrates:
- Cutting Soil: This light, well-draining potting mix is made for cuttings! It is ready to go straight out of the bag, but feel free to mix it with other substrates to give your roots an extra growth boost.
- Perlite: These small, lightweight pellets help create airiness in the soil. They allow the roots to breathe and prevent the soil from becoming too soggy.
- Vermiculite: This very light soil holds and evenly distributes moisture without becoming too wet. It is perfect for plants that love to stay a little on the moist side.
- Sphagnum Moss: This moss is great for holding moisture and encouraging healthy root growth. It is a top choice for cuttings that need extra moisture.
Don’t be afraid to experiment with different substrates and find the perfect mix for your cuttings!
Caring for your cuttings: light, water, and temperature
Now that your cuttings are starting to root, it is important to keep them happy:
- Place your cuttings in a bright spot, but avoid direct sunlight. Too much sun can burn them, and not enough light can slow down root growth. Indirect light works best!
- Water your cuttings regularly, but make sure the soil isn’t soaking wet. They don’t like to sit in a mud bath, so let the soil dry out a bit before watering again.
- Cuttings love warmth! A cosy spot between 18 and 22°C is perfect. Just keep them away from drafty or overly hot areas.
Extra tips for fast-growing cuttings
Want your cuttings to grow faster? Here are a few extra tips:
- Place your cuttings in a humid environment (like a mini greenhouse or a clear plastic bag). This boosts humidity and helps roots develop quicker.
- Is it too dark for your cuttings? Try using a grow light! If you are rooting cuttings in winter, extra light can speed up their growth.
- Plant supports are a great help. They guide your cuttings as they grow, keeping them upright. Especially for climbing plants, they are a must!
Start your spring with growth!
With these tips, you are ready to give your cuttings a head start. Patience is key! With the right care, your cuttings will grow into beautiful, mature plants. So, what are you waiting for? Start planting and give your plants the boost they deserve! Happy planting!
