Grow your own Oxalis Triangularis Tuber in 2025

The Oxalis Triangularis tuber is one of the easiest and most rewarding plants to grow at home, and once she matures, she looks like a thousand fluttering butterflies! Isn’t that amazing?

Beyond her beauty, the Oxalis Triangularis is also seen as a symbol of luck in many cultures: from feng shui traditions to St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. That’s why she’s often called the “False Shamrock,” although you might also hear her referred to as “Wood Sorrel.” She comes in a variety of colours, such as rich purple or bright green, and can produce the most delicate flowers. The perfect finishing touch for this charming plant.

Ready to grow your lucky charm in 2025? Let’s dive into how to plant, care for, and enjoy your beautiful Oxalis Triangularis.

Prepare her home

Once your Oxalis tubers arrive, it’s time to decide how you’ll plant them. You can place multiple tubers together in one pot for a fuller look, or plant them individually. She prefers a pot with drainage holes: a nursery pot, a terracotta pot, or any container that allows excess water to escape. You can always place this inside a decorative outer pot if you want a polished look.

Fill your pot with a mix of soil and peat. This combination helps the soil stay evenly moist without becoming waterlogged. The perfect balance for your False Shamrock!

Time to plant those tubers

Place each tuber vertically in the soil, with the thinner end pointing upward. If you’re planting several in one pot, leave about an inch of space between each one to allow them room to grow. Once positioned, gently cover the tubers with a thin layer of soil.

Care, patience, and a little bit of love

After planting, it’s time to wait for the magic to happen! Sprouts will typically appear within 3 to 6 weeks. Patience is key, but trust us, watching those first leaves unfold in 2025 will be totally worth it.

Find her perfect spot

Even though the tubers start underground, your Oxalis will thrive once she gets access to bright, indirect light. She can tolerate lower light, but her leaves may lose some of their vibrant colour. To keep her hues bold and beautiful, find her a bright, cozy spot in your home.

She prefers a stable temperature between 15–21°C and average room humidity. Water her whenever the top layer of soil feels dry and feed her monthly during the growing season with PLNTS nutrition to keep her healthy and strong.

Bloom, baby, bloom

From June to August, your Oxalis will reward you with delicate flowers ranging from white to soft pink, an adorable addition to her butterfly-like leaves. One of her most fascinating traits is her ability to open and close her leaves based on light levels. When evening comes, she gently folds them, as if going to sleep, and opens them again in the morning.

She’s a true performer, showing off her beauty from day to night!

The circle of life

Like all good things, her growing season will come to a pause. Around autumn, your Oxalis will naturally enter dormancy, and her leaves will start to fade. Don’t worry! This is just her resting phase. You can cut away the dead foliage and store the pot in a cool, dark place. There’s no need to water or fertilize her during this time.

After a few weeks (or months), new growth will begin to sprout: a sure sign that she’s ready to return to her bright, comfy spot and start the cycle all over again.

This is everything you need to know to grow your own Oxalis Triangularis successfully in 2025!
