The Philodendron Pink Princess does occur in nature but wasn’t discovered by a botanist in the jungle by accident like most botanical plants. The Pink Princess was created by selective breeding of the Philodendron Erubescens, which is native to Colombia. Selective breeding is a process where plant experts choose plants with desirable traits, to propagate further with and sometimes they are able to create a brand new plant species, just like the Pink Princess!. Philodendron Erubescens plant has red stems and dark green leaves, some characteristics we recognize within the Pink Princess. Some Philodendron Erubescens displayed variegation, which is what drove the plant experts to breed further. Eventually, they ended up with the plant we know today to be the Philodendron Pink Princess. If that isn’t real-life magic, we don’t know what is!

Care guide

The Philodendron Pink Princess has quite a few standards when it comes to caring, she is royalty after all! Nevertheless, when you get these tricks up your sleeve, you will be more than able to grow this Princess to her fullest potential!

Find out more below

Light

The Philodendron Pink Princess needs to receive as much bright indirect light as she can get. This has to do with the variegation on the leaves. Within the pink parts of the leaves, there is no chlorophyll. Let that be the substance that supports the process of photosynthesis, the process that lets plants produce energy. That is why a steady light source is super important. But just keep an eye on any scorching that might happen. You wouldn’t want this beauty to get brown and crispy.

Soil Mix

The Philodendron is an aroid, which refers to the overall plant family this Princess comes from. They really like a chunky soil mix that is rich in organic materials. To help you with getting this right, we have created an aroid potting mix kit. This kit contains all the needed substrates to live up to the royal standards of your very own Pink Princess. We like to mix the substrates to the following percentages: 60% soil, 15% tree bark, 10% coco fibre, 10% active charcoal, and 5% Perlite.

Water

You can water this royal plant whenever the top of the soil is feeling dry. Just make sure the soil doesn’t dry out completely, since the Pink Princess prefers to grow in slightly moist soil. Excess water should be able to drain from the pot, for example by using a nursery pot or terracotta pot with drainage holes. This prevents your plants from getting root rot.

Temperature and Humidity

As for the overall environmental factors, this Princess is a tropical lady and prefers these types of circumstances. That is why we would advise keeping the temperature anywhere between 19 and 29 degrees. The humidity should be at least 60% for this beauty to grow fully satisfied in the surroundings.

Propagating

Are you growing your very own Pink Princess successfully? Woohoo, we are so very proud of you! You might be more than ready to take caring for the Philodendron Pink Princess to the next level, by propagating her. You will have a thriving family of Pink Princesses in your urban jungle if you work those magical green thumbs of yours! Let’s go through the steps on how you can make cuttings

Step 1

Make sure your plant is happy and thriving. This enhances the chance of successful Pink Princess propagation. Also, make sure to disinfect your shears before using them, you wouldn’t want to rub any dirt or bacteria in the fresh wounds of your pretty Pink Princess.

Step 2

It’s now time to make the cutting, it may seem scary but we know you have the courage! You can cut between 2 nodes, which you can recognize as bumps on the stem. Sometimes aerial roots are growing around the nodes, which makes them a little bit easier to recognize.

Step 3

Now it’s time to let your Pink Princess cutting root. You can choose substrates like, water, sphagnum moss, or perlite as a growing medium. We would also highly recommend closing the environment while your cutting grows. This heightens the humidity and temperature, which is just ideal for your developing cutting!

Step 4

Patience, love, and care are all you need right now. It can take several weeks before your cutting roots or shows new growth. Keep an eye on any rotting in the stem that might occur. If that happens, it can be cut back as long as you don’t cut into the node. But we think with your magical green thumbs, you will be a very successful propagating plant parent!
