Decorating with houseplants to match your bohemian interior style

Everyone will picture a kind of hippie vibe when they think of bohemian interiors. Yet the look of a bohemian interior can be as intricate or as sleek as you like. More is more; this is a style where there is no such thing as "too much". All kinds of furniture work in this aesthetic, yet we quickly think of chaise lounges and floor pillows to a standard sofa with lots of loose decorative cushions. What this style is all about is creating an atmosphere that you enjoy, rather than creating definitive lines. Let's see what else is involved in creating a bohemian interior style..

History of bohemian interior design

The bohemian interior style began in the 19th century. By merging their cultures, ideals and refusing to conform to what was customary, artists, writers and performers (the original bohemians) unintentionally started an interior design trend. They believed that creativity was more valuable than money. What beautiful thoughts, right?

The bohemian style, named after these 'nomadic creatives', aimed to completely disregard standards of beauty and style by throwing out all the rules and embracing the unconventional. It is nice to see that always following the rules or others is not at all good. Something beautiful can arise when you let your own creativity do the talking.

Features of bohemian interior style

Bohemian styles are defined by a lack of structure, and instead choose carefree layers of pattern, texture, and colour. So while there are some common elements to the bohemian look, there are absolutely no hard rules like there are with modern or minimalist. The core of the bohemian aesthetic is that it is very personal and relaxing! Boho styles are not styled for someone else's pleasure, but for your own. So there are no definitive instructions for this style, but there are a few things you can keep in mind that will be a great starting point for inspiring those boho vibes:

  • Mixing and layering eclectic patterns and textures: think vintage cushions, classic poufs and beanbags, and rugs with a mix of patterns and textures.
  • Different types of lighting: add an abundance of lighting, such as different types of lamps and/or candles to create a cosy atmosphere.
  • Saturated colours: many bright shades as well as metallic gold, are important in a bohemian styled space. Bright colours set the tone for an eclectic mix of styles. Also add botanical plants for a refreshing pop of colour.
  • Various natural materials: natural materials such as bamboo, wool, wood, jute and rope, but really much more, are indispensable in a bohemian interior style.
  • Handmade pieces: with a history inspired by artists, it makes sense to embrace handmade pieces, such as paintings, quilts, rugs, macramé, sculptures or pottery.

The best plants to add to your bohemian interior decor

As mentioned above, plants definitely bring colour and life to your bohemian interior. In addition, plants simply create a nice atmosphere in your home and let that be very important in this interior style. The beauty of this style is that you can mix and match everything. Great, right? Now all you have to do is choose between all those beautiful plants. Which plants are beautiful in your bohemian interior, but also easy to take care of? No worries... We put them all together for you!

Monstera Adansonii

This green beauty, the Monstera Adansonii, is well known to us and we actually think she fits into any interior. She has beautiful green leaves with holes more in the middle of the plant, near the vein. This makes her special, and a nice bonus is that she is also easy to take care of!

Calathea Orbifolia

The Calathea Orbifolia is an impressive lady. The width of her leaves really makes her stand out. The oversized green leaves are decorated with beautiful silver stripes. Because of this, she will really shine and be an addition to any, but certainly your bohemian interior.

Strelitzia Nicolai

This great beauty is very popular and we understand why. Look at this Strelitzia Nicolai! That is why we will be very surprised if this plant suddenly becomes less trendy. Her beautiful large leaves immediately give a green atmosphere to your interior and that is what you want, isn't it? Her sister, Strelitzia Reginae, is a great pick too!

Monstera Deliciosa

The Monstera Deliciosa is a large, popular and lush plant that is perhaps also better known as the Swiss cheese plant. She is called this because of her leaves, which are full of large holes. The Monstera is a strong plant that is easy to take care of. Will you let her grow even bigger in your bohemian interior? In general, (variegated) Monstera's are perfect plants to add to your bohemian interior. The Monstera Deliciosa Less Variegata or Monstera Thai Constellation are real showstoppers!

Musa Dwarf Cavendish

The Musa Dwarf Cavendish is the plant that will add some extra colour and pattern to your bohemian interior. It also gives the room a paradise-like vibe, which makes you feel good and therefore fits perfectly with the bohemian style.

Ficus Lyrata Branched

Lastly, the Ficus Lyrata will really add another texture to your bohemian interior. This giant beauty is extra special as she has multiple branches. This way she easily fills up the space, not only in height but also in width!

Bohemian plant pots that will match your interior!

With a plant comes a pot! We understand that you want your plant pot to match your interior and the complete ambiance. We would therefore gladly list a few pots for you. In our opinion, these pots fit perfectly with the bohemian interior style. All these pots have the colours, texture or patterns; the characteristics that suit the bohemian interior style.

Adding the right plants will give your bohemian interior the perfect finishing touch and add personality and good feeling to a space. We're pretty sure this style will be around for a while!
