The family of Calathea plants is very large. They come in all shapes and sizes and they all have uniquely coloured leaves. With so many different varieties, there are many different nicknames. Besides "prayer plant" and "living plant", some species are also called "peacock plants".

Many Calatheas have distinctive designs on their leaves. The design of the Calathea Makoyana closely resembles the feathers of a peacock. The stem and the underside of the leaves have a beautiful purple colour, which it does not hesitate to show at dusk.

The colour pattern, which ranges from dark, bright green to creamy white, combined with the shape of the leaves, resembles a medallion, hence the name.

The green leaves are decorated with silver stripes and can grow up to 30 cm wide. This puts it at the top of the list of largest leaves in the Calathea family.

Therefore, it straightens its leaves to reduce the amount of light. Leaf curling is often linked to low humidity. Temperature can also be a cause.
