Soft blue-green fronds, cut into deep, wavy lobes, fan out from the pot like a little fountain. Look closer at the base and you'll spot furry, rusty-brown rhizomes creeping over the soil, a habit it picked up growing on tree trunks in the forests of the Americas. Picture it on a bright shelf in your living room, where the cool-toned leaves catch the daylight and soften all that warm wood and terracotta around it. It's also more relaxed about dry indoor air than most ferns, which makes this green friend a lovely first fern. Let those fuzzy rhizomes wander over the rim of the pot and wait for the first visitor who asks what they are.
Give it bright, indirect light, for example a metre from an east or west-facing window, because strong midday sun scorches those soft fronds. Water when the top few centimetres of soil feel dry, roughly once a week, and let the excess drain away, since the rhizomes rot in soggy soil. Rest the rhizomes on top of the soil instead of burying them, they like to breathe. Normal room temperature between 16 and 26°C suits it well, and a little extra humidity, say on a bathroom shelf, keeps the frond tips looking neat. Repot every two years into airy potting soil with a bit of perlite or bark, and feed at half strength once a month in spring and summer. If the fronds turn yellow, check whether the soil stays too wet, and brown tips usually mean the air is a little too dry.
