Blue-grey fronds with deep, wavy lobes: that's the first thing you'll notice about this fern. Look a little closer and you'll spot furry, caramel-coloured rhizomes creeping over the soil like tiny paws, which is perfectly normal and part of the charm. In the wild, Phlebodium grows on tree trunks in the tropical Americas, so it likes a bright spot without harsh sun and a bit of air around its roots. Picture this small green friend on a shelf in your living room, where its cool tones calm all the green around it. Give it a little time and it will fill out into a lush fern that makes your urban jungle feel a bit wilder.
Bright, indirect light keeps the blue tint of the fronds at its best, so a spot near an east or north-facing window works nicely. Water when the top two centimetres of soil feel dry and let the excess drain away, because those furry rhizomes rot quickly if they sit wet. A short dry spell is forgiven more easily than soggy feet. It enjoys a little humidity and temperatures between 16 and 26 degrees, so a bright bathroom suits it well, as long as it's away from radiators and draughts. Repot into a shallow pot with airy potting soil when the roots fill the pot, about every two years, and leave the rhizomes resting on top of the soil. From spring to summer you can give half-strength plant food once a month, but wait a few months after your green friend arrives. If the tips of the fronds turn brown, the air is probably a bit too dry.
