Thick, glossy, heart-shaped leaves that look like fat little raindrops: that's the first thing you'll notice about this one. Run a fingertip over a leaf and you'll feel how plump and waxy it is, because it stores water in there, a clever trick from the rainforests of South America. Picture it on a bright shelf or beside your laptop, deep green foliage on upright stems catching the light. It stays compact and tidy, so it fits on a windowsill or in a bookcase without taking over. If you're after a green friend that doesn't mind the odd forgotten watering, this one will settle in nicely, and it's safe around cats and dogs too.
Give it bright, indirect light, ideally about a metre from a window, and the leaves stay glossy while the stems grow upright; harsh midday sun can scorch them. Let the soil dry out a little before you water again, roughly every other week, because the thick leaves store water and soggy roots are the one thing this green friend really dislikes. Not sure? Push a finger into the soil, and if the top few centimetres feel dry, go ahead. Normal room temperature, between 15 and 26 °C, suits it well and it doesn't need extra humidity, but keep it away from draughty windowsills and radiators in winter. Use an airy, well-draining mix and repot only every two years or so, since the small root system likes a snug pot, and feed with diluted plant food once a month in spring and summer. If the leaves turn soft or drop, you're most likely watering too much, so ease off a little.
