The Alocasia sarawakensis 'Yucatan Princess' is an Alocasia variety with huge, glossy, crinkled gray-green leaves held up on strong red-brown stems.
Despite the fact that the name 'Yucatan' suggests otherwise, the Alocasia Yucatan Princess originally hails from the tropical rainforest of Southeast Asia. She prefers a nice warm spots with lots of light.
This eccentric princess can be quite a drama queen. Sometimes, she just starts to cry a little and droplets of liquid appear on the tip of the leaf(s). This ‘weeping’ is called “guttation” and is a sign of overwatering, but nothing to seriously worry about. Just give her a little less to drink next time you water her.
One of the most striking features of the Alocasia is her giant pointed leaves that look a little like elephant ears, hence the nickname 'Elephant Ear'. In the tropical rainforests of Southeast-Asian, the leaves of the Alocasia can grow to gigantic sizes. This makes the Alocasia a great hiding spot for rainforest animals. Don’t let this fool you though, this so called animal friend is toxic when ingested!
