Meet the Tacca Chantrieri, a green friend you won't forget in a hurry. Its dark, almost black flowers look like a bat spreading its wings, with long, whiskery threads trailing down beneath them. Add big, glossy green leaves and you've got instant tropical drama in any room. It's still fairly new on the market, so this is a true head-turner that hardly anyone has at home yet. Give it a bright, warm spot, the bathroom is perfect, and watch it become the talk of your urban jungle. A real character for anyone who loves something a little different.

Your Tacca loves plenty of bright, indirect light, but keep it out of harsh direct sun, which scorches the leaves. It's a thirsty one: water generously every week and keep the soil evenly moist, never soggy. It doesn't like sitting in water, so tip out any excess from the cover pot after about 15 minutes. Give it high humidity and temperatures between 18 and 30 °C, which is why a bathroom or a spot next to a humidifier suits it so well. Cold draughts and dry radiator air are its biggest enemies; brown leaf edges are a sign the air is too dry. Repot every two years into airy, well-draining soil, and feed every two weeks in spring and summer.
