Picture a soft-lit corner of your living room, with glossy dark green leaves rising to around 70 cm and creamy white blooms floating above them. Those 'flowers' are really spathes, modified leaves that wrap around the tiny true flowers, which is why they last for weeks instead of days. This peace lily also has a charming way of talking to you: when it's thirsty the leaves droop, and after a good drink it's standing tall again within hours. It loves gentle light and brings life to bare walls. Give this green friend a spot in your urban jungle and it'll keep the white blooms coming, season after season.
Give it bright, indirect light and it'll flower generously, though it copes with a shadier corner too, just with fewer blooms. Water about once a week, as soon as the top 2 to 3 cm of soil feels dry, and let the excess drain away so the roots never sit in a puddle. If the leaves droop, that's simply your cue to water, and it'll bounce back within hours. It feels at home between 16 and 28 degrees Celsius and enjoys some humidity, so an occasional misting or a spot in a bright bathroom keeps the leaf tips from browning. Use an airy potting soil, repot every two years into a pot one size up in spring, and feed every few weeks in spring and summer with a little houseplant food. Yellow leaves usually mean too much water, so ease off a little and give it time. Keep it out of reach of curious pets, as the leaves are mildly toxic if nibbled.
