Glossy, heart-shaped leaves in deep green, each new one unfurling with a soft touch of bronze: that's the charm of this trailing climber. In the rainforests of Central and South America it scrambles up tree trunks, so at home it's just as happy draping over a shelf or climbing a moss pole. Picture it on a bookcase in your living room, vines spilling down and softening every hard edge. It's a forgiving green friend that tells you when it's thirsty by letting its leaves droop a little, which makes it a lovely start for your urban jungle. Give it a bit of time and it'll grow into a leafy curtain you'll be proud of.
Give it bright, indirect light and it'll reward you with steady, glossy growth, though it copes with a little less light too. Water when the top few centimetres of soil feel dry, roughly every week or two, and let any excess drain away, because soggy roots are the one thing it really dislikes. Keep it between 16 and 28 °C, away from draughty windowsills, and a bit of extra humidity makes the leaves even happier. Plant it in airy, well-draining potting soil and repot every couple of years, once roots start peeking out of the bottom of the pot. Feed it every few weeks in spring and summer, and let it rest in winter. Yellow leaves usually mean too much water, so ease off and let the soil dry out a little before the next drink. Good to know: it's toxic to pets if nibbled, so keep it out of reach of curious cats and dogs.
