The Calathea Medallion earns her name with broad, rounded leaves that look like decorative shields, each one painted with deep green centres ringed by lighter green and silvery feathered edges. Flip a leaf over and you'll find the dramatic burgundy underside that flashes when she folds up at night. At XXL she's a real statement plant, full, lush and instantly recognisable, perfect for the corner of a living room, a stairwell or a hotel-lobby kind of moment in your own home. A classic Calathea, just bigger and bolder.
Give your Calathea bright but indirect light, never direct sun, which scorches those delicate leaves. Water when the top centimetre of soil feels dry, ideally with filtered water or rainwater, as hard tap water can brown the leaf tips. She loves humidity, so a bathroom, kitchen, or a misting routine will keep her happiest, with temperatures between 18, 26°C. Repot every two years into a well-draining mix of potting soil and perlite. Feed gently in spring and summer only. If you spot crispy edges, she's telling you to raise the humidity or switch to softer water, she's chatty like that.
