Thick, fleshy leaves in a soft grey-green, standing up like spears and edged with tiny, gentle teeth: that's an Aloë Vera in its prime. At 60 cm tall in a 19 cm pot, this green friend already makes an impression on a sunny windowsill or right beside a bright window in your living room. Those plump leaves are little water tanks, so it won't hold a forgotten watering against you. New leaves keep unfurling from the centre and pups pop up around the base, which means your urban jungle may soon have a few extras to share. Give it the brightest spot you've got and it will keep that fresh, sculptural look all year round.

Give your Aloë Vera the brightest spot you have, ideally by a south or west-facing window with a few hours of direct sun, so the leaves stay firm and upright. Let the soil dry out completely before you water again, roughly every two weeks in summer and even less in winter, because the leaves store water and soggy roots are what it really dislikes. Water till it runs out of the drainage holes, then empty the saucer so it never stands in water. Thin, curling leaves? That simply means it's thirsty, so no need to worry. Room temperature suits it well, anywhere between 10 and 30 °C, as long as you keep it away from frost and cold draughts. Use a fast-draining cactus or succulent mix, repot about every two years when the pups crowd the pot, and give it a little cactus feed in spring and summer. Good to know: the leaf sap can upset cats and dogs if they nibble it, so keep it out of reach of curious pets.
