Thick, fleshy leaves in soft grey-green, edged with tiny teeth and dotted with pale flecks when young: that's an aloe at its most photogenic. Each leaf stores a cool, clear gel, which is how it sits out long dry spells in its home region, the Arabian Peninsula. Picture it on a sunny windowsill, sending up new leaves from the centre in a tidy rosette that gets a little fuller every season. At 40 cm tall in a 14 cm pot, it fits a shelf or a side table just as easily. It's relaxed about the odd forgotten watering, so it's a good green friend if you're just starting out or have a busy week. Give it a bright spot and it'll quietly get on with growing.

Bright light keeps this aloe compact and sturdy, so give it your sunniest windowsill, with a few hours of direct sun if you can. Let the soil dry out completely before you water again, usually every two weeks and less in winter. Those plump leaves are its water tank, so soggy roots are a far bigger problem than a missed watering. It's happy at normal room temperature and doesn't mind dry air, but keep it above 10 °C and away from frost. Plant it in airy cactus or succulent soil in a pot with drainage holes, and repot every two years or when the pups crowd the pot. Feed it a little in spring and summer, and not at all in winter. Keep it out of reach of curious cats and dogs, as the leaf sap can upset their tummies.

That’s why all plants are guaranteed for 30 days after arrival, if still in its original nursery pot.
