(Mistletoe cactus) Burchellii

Shorter and denser than most Rhipsalis, with fine bristly stems that branch close together and build up into a compact green pompom before they start to trail. Burchellii is the one to pick if you want texture rather than length, since it stays fuller near the top instead of thinning out. Look closely in spring and you may spot tiny cream flowers followed by translucent white berries along the stems. It is an epiphyte from the Brazilian forests, so shade and airflow matter far more than sunshine. A charming little green friend that grows into something surprisingly lush.

Your Rhipsalis Burchellii likes bright indirect light and needs protection from direct midday sun. Water every other week, letting the top half of the soil dry out before soaking it thoroughly and letting the excess run off. It stores water in those stems, so err on the side of too dry rather than too wet, since a soggy base rots quickly. Plant it in a very airy mix with plenty of perlite, and repot only every three years because it flowers better with slightly cramped roots. Feed once a month in spring and summer, then stop entirely through the winter. A bit of extra humidity keeps the stems plump, so it does well grouped with other plants.
