Ficus Elastica Abidjan is the moody beauty of the rubber plant family. Her large leathery leaves are so deeply burgundy they look almost black, with a glossy shine that catches every bit of light in the room. She grows steadily upward into a striking statement piece that gives any corner instant character. Easygoing and air purifying on top of it all, this green friend earns her spot in your urban jungle without asking much in return.
Your rubber plant likes a bright spot without harsh midday sun, where her glossy leaves colour up best. Water about once every two weeks and let the top few centimetres of soil dry out first; her thick leaves store plenty of reserves. She is fine with normal room humidity, though an occasional wipe with a damp cloth keeps those big leaves shiny and breathing. Repot every two years into fresh, airy potting soil and give her some plant food in spring and summer. Watch out for cold draughts and remember her milky sap can irritate, so keep curious pets and little hands away.
