Fatsia

(Japanese aralia) Japonica

Glossy leaves shaped like open hands, each one with deep lobes that fan out like a green high five: that's the first thing you'll notice. They can grow as wide as a dinner plate over time, and Fatsia japonica comes from the coastal woodlands of Japan, so it's used to calm, softly lit corners. Give it a spot in your hallway or a quiet corner of the living room and that bold silhouette adds a jungly feel straight away. New leaves unfurl in a fresh, light green before settling into a deep, polished shade, so there's always something happening. This easygoing green friend is happy in light shade and doesn't mind a cooler room, which makes it a lovely first big leaf plant for your urban jungle.

Give it a bright spot out of the harsh midday sun, or a place in light shade, because those big leaves scorch and fade easily in strong sun. Water when the top few centimetres of soil feel dry, roughly once a week in spring and summer and a little less in winter. Fatsia likes evenly moist soil but dislikes wet feet, and drooping leaves can mean thirst or too much water, so check the soil before you reach for the watering can. It's happiest in a cooler room between 10 and 22°C and away from radiators, where dry air turns the leaf edges brown. Repot into airy potting soil every two years, in a pot one size up, when roots start to peek out of the drainage holes. Feed it every few weeks in spring and summer and let it rest in winter. Wipe the leaves with a damp cloth now and then to keep them glossy, and keep it out of reach of curious pets, as nibbling can upset their tummies.

That’s why all plants are guaranteed for 30 days after arrival, if still in its original nursery pot.
