New growth on this fern unfurls in a warm coppery bronze before settling into deep green, which is exactly why it is known as the mahogany fern. The fronds are twice divided into small rounded leaflets, giving the whole plant a light, feathery silhouette that never looks heavy. It is one of the more forgiving ferns, happy to sit quietly in a shaded corner and slowly build up density. At this size it fits neatly on a desk or a bathroom shelf and grows into something much fuller over a season or two. A lovely first fern if previous ones have not survived your care.

Give your mahogany fern bright indirect light and keep it well away from a sunny window. Water weekly so the soil stays evenly damp, and check the top centimetre with your finger rather than watering on a fixed schedule. It handles average room humidity better than most ferns, though a bathroom or a spot near other plants will bring out fuller growth. Use a light, airy potting mix with perlite and repot every two years in spring. Feed once a month from March through September and skip feeding entirely in winter. If the new coppery fronds turn brown before they open, the air is too dry or the soil dried out at the wrong moment.
