(Japanese Maple) Atropurpureum

The Acer Atropurpureum is a Japanese maple with deep red-purple, finely lobed leaves that glow in spring and summer and turn fiery red in autumn. It grows into an elegant, wide-spreading shrub or small tree that reaches about 400-500 cm in height and 300-400 cm in width at maturity. Plant it as a solitary specimen, as it needs about 4-6 square meters of space to show its natural shape. Its sculpted branches and rich foliage make it a showpiece in a front garden, a courtyard or a large container on the patio. Young plants stay compact for years, so it is also lovely in a pot at first.

Plant the Acer in partial shade or a spot with morning sun and shelter from strong wind and scorching afternoon sun, which can burn the leaves. It prefers fertile, humus-rich, well-draining soil that stays lightly moist but never waterlogged. Water regularly in dry spells, and keep a close eye on plants in pots, as they dry out much faster. Pruning is rarely needed; remove dead or crossing branches in late summer or early autumn, never in spring when the sap is rising. This maple is fully hardy and survives the winter outdoors, but protect pots from deep frost by wrapping them or moving them to a sheltered spot.
