(Japanese Maple) Atropurpureum

The Acer Atropurpureum is a graceful Japanese maple with finely cut, deep red-purple leaves that glow in spring and turn fiery red in autumn. It reaches about 400-500 cm in height and 300-400 cm in width at maturity, although it grows slowly and stays compact for many years. Plant it as a solitary tree, as 1 per 10 square meters, or in a large container on the patio. Its elegant, spreading habit makes it a striking focal point in Japanese-style, modern and cottage gardens alike.

Plant the Acer in a sunny to semi-shaded position, sheltered from strong wind and the hottest afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves. It prefers humus-rich, well-draining soil that stays slightly moist and does not mind a little acidity. Water regularly during dry spells, especially when grown in a pot, as container plants dry out much faster. Prune as little as possible, only removing dead or crossing branches in late autumn or winter, never in spring when the sap rises. The Acer is fully hardy, but in a pot it helps to wrap the container or move it to a sheltered spot during severe frost.
