How to care for Anthurium Warocqueanum: expert tips for thriving plants
We introduce to you the queen of the Anthuriums, the Anthurium Warocqueanum. Don’t worry, we can’t pronounce her name properly either. If you are keen on trying to pronounce her name properly, you are supposed to say it like war-o-kwee-an-um. Nevertheless such a fancy plant couldn’t go without such a special name, right?
Fun fact! The foliage of the Anthurium Warocqueanum has a luxurious look, thanks to the dark colour and the velvet look. She might even look like she is soft to touch, but nothing is less true. Her leaves actually have a leathery texture.
She was discovered by Gustav Wallis in what is now called Columbia, back in 1872. She grows in the forest, naturally as an epiphyte or hemiepiphytes. Epiphytes are known to grow on top of other plants and benefit from the energy and nutrients from the plant they grow on top of. Hemiepiphytes also grow on top of other plants, but just during a part of their life span. The Warocqueanum can do it all!
Fun fact! The Anthurium Warocqueanum can also produce some flowers! Unfortunately these aren’t as jaw dropping as her magnificent leaves, but are still a nice trait that the plant has.
Anthurium Warocqueanum care guide
This amazing plant has some requirements when it comes to caring for her, but luckily it is not too complicated. But if you have just started your PLNTSparent journey you might first want to get familiar with different care requirements before giving this lush plant a go. But whenever you are ready to try, here is the full care guide on how to care for the Anthurium Warocqueanum
Light
You can start with making sure this breathtaking plant gets the right amount of light that she needs to produce those big leaves for you. You can either place her in bright indirect light or dappled light. If you give her a spot where she receives too much light, it can cause scorching. But too low light can cause stunted growth and new foliage being very small.
Expert tip! Getting to know what specific light requirements can be a bit confusing. If you are asking yourself by reading this, what bright indirect or dappled light is, you might want to get more knowledge. PLNTS to the rescue, we have made a blog about what these terms all mean. Full sun, partial shade and shade houseplants: understanding the terms
Watering
This beauty of a plant can be a bit picky when it comes to her watering routine. Her soil can stay slightly moist, which would result in a good soak once a week. Make sure to drain excess water, since you wouldn’t want this to accumulate inside the pot. There is quite a thin line between watering enough or too little or too much. When you are not giving her sufficient water, you might see her leaves curling and maybe some browning spots. Too much water will result in yellowing leaves, drooping foliage and rot.
Expert tip! We would recommend basically any plant to plant them in a pot with drainage holes. This reduces the chance of any plant getting root rot and especially with the Anthurium Warocqueanum who is already quite picky about her watering, can be a real solution for us PLNTSparents.
Temperature and humidity
As we know this stunner originates from the tropics, this is the type of environment that we should try to recreate. She likes to be warm and cozy in temperatures ranging from 18 degrees to 27 degrees. She will absolutely thrive in a humidity of over 80%, but she is tolerant to lower humidities between 50-60%.
Fun fact! You know that the leaves of the Anthurium Warocqueanum can become very big, but they can reach a length up to 1.8 meters!
Soil
You will make your queen Anthurium very happy with a well draining, but moisture holding soil mix. We would recommend using our Epiphyte potting mix kit to create your own mix at home. We would suggest using these ratios: 85% French bark 10% Sphagnum moss, 3% Perlite and 2% Charcoal.
Expert tip! This beauty would love to grow with some support. She is a real climber and this support will stimulate her in growing those massive leaves for you. A moss pole is a perfect suitor, but maybe you would like to keep it fancy with an ornamental plant stake.
Propagating Anthurium Warocqueanum
Have you been growing your Anthurium Warocqueanum for a while and decided that it’s time to multiply this breathtaking plant? This is the most known and popular way, stem cuttings. You preferably take off the top of the plant (a top cutting), since this can grow further the easiest. Here is how to do it:
Step 1
Make sure you have taken the best care you can off your queen Anthurium before taking a cutting, which includes hydrating her the day before you are planning to take cuttings from her.
Step 2
Find the node. This is a thicker bud on the plant. Once you have found it you can cut approximately 2 centimeters underneath the node with clean shears.
Step 3
Now you have a cutting and it can be placed in a growing medium. You can choose water, which displays your growing roots beautifully, or any other substrate that you prefer. When you choose to root directly into soil, you might want to check out our rooting powder for extra healthy and strong roots.
Expert tip! Your cutting is now a tiny baby plant that would benefit from a safe space. A growing house with a matching pot and saucer would do her very good, since the temperature will be increased there and you can maximize the humidity. That sounds like a nice and cozy spot, right?
Anthurium Warocqueanum Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Why is the Anthurium Warocqueanum so expensive?
This mainly has to do with demand and supply, which is the thing with most rare plants. They are quite hard to come by, but are highly sought after.
It also has to do with the fact that this is not the easiest plant to take care of. She is pretty picky with her watering routine and has the habit to rot if she is slightly overwatered.
Why is the Anthurium Warocqueanum so difficult?
As mentioned with the question above, the queen Anthurium is really picky when it comes to her watering routine. Most problems will be caused by this issue. That is why you might want some help from a tool like a water metro or plant sensor.
Is it okay to mist the Anthurium Warocqueanum?
We would suggest using a humidifier, rather than misting your plants. Misting heightens the humidity for only a short while, but a humidifier will heighten it constantly.
Misting can also make some spots on the leaves that will be very visible on her dark foliage. It also can benefit the plant by making her leaves clean and shiny, but you can also achieve this by wiping the leaves with a leaf glove or towel regularly.
Is the Anthurium Warocqueanum toxic?
Unfortunately, she is toxic to both humans and animals. So you might want to keep them away from this special plant. A greenhouse could always be a good option for you!
How can I make the Anthurium Warocqueanum grow faster?
By keeping up the great care you provide her with! Prune of any dead or dying foliage, repot when needed and give her fertilizer to her specific needs. That should make your queen Anthurium grow as fast as she possibly can. :)
What are the common pests on the Anthurium Warocqueanum?
You want to keep your eyes open for spider mites, mealybugs and scale insects. A regular plant inspection is always advised, which is also the perfect time to wipe off any dust from her big leaves.
