(Pitcher plant) Juthatip Soper

This one does not just sit there looking pretty, it actively hunts. Each pitcher is a tall, hooded trumpet in green streaked with deep red veining, filled with nectar that lures insects straight down the throat. Juthatip Soper is one of the showiest hybrids around, with squat, wide mouthed traps that colour up dramatically as they mature. It is a bog plant at heart, so it wants sun, soft water and wet feet, which makes it a genuinely different kind of houseplant. A conversation starter for anyone who thinks plants are passive.

Give your pitcher plant as much direct sun as you can, a south facing windowsill or even a sunny balcony in summer. Water only with rainwater, distilled or filtered water, because tap water minerals will slowly kill it. Stand the pot in a tray with two centimetres of water and keep it there all through spring and summer, this plant genuinely likes wet feet. Never fertilise the soil, it feeds itself by catching insects and nutrients in the substrate will burn the roots. Use a peat free carnivorous mix with moss and perlite and repot every two years in early spring. In winter it needs a cool rest around 5 to 10 degrees with much less water, and the pitchers dying back then is completely normal.
