(Snake plant) Fernwood Mikado

Think of the pick-up sticks game and you'll see why this one is called Mikado. Its slim, upright leaves rise from the pot in a tidy fan, deep green with a lighter banding and a pointed tip that looks freshly sharpened. At 70 cm tall in a 19 cm pot, it fits the narrow corner next to your sofa or sideboard, where a wider green friend would never squeeze in. The stiff, straight leaves bring calm, architectural lines to a room full of softer shapes. Because those leaves store water, it forgives you a forgotten watering when life gets busy. Give it a bright spot and it will keep standing tall in your urban jungle for years.

Give it bright, indirect light, though a shadier corner works too, you'll just notice slower growth. Let the soil dry out almost completely before you water again, usually every two to three weeks, because the leaves and roots store water and soggy soil is the quickest way to rot. Push a finger a few centimetres into the soil to check, and water even less in winter. It's happiest between 15 and 30 °C, needs no extra humidity and dislikes cold draughts. Use well-draining potting soil and repot only when the roots fill the pot, about every three years, since this one likes a snug fit. Feed it a little plant food once a month in spring and summer, and skip it in winter. Soft, mushy leaves at the base mean it has had too much water, so ease off and check the roots. It's mildly toxic to cats and dogs if they nibble it, so keep it out of reach.
