(Mistletoe cactus) Heteroclada

Fine, pencil thin stems branch out in every direction and then tumble downward in a soft green tangle, so the plant looks more like coral than cactus. Rhipsalis Heteroclada builds up density over time until you have a proper cloud of green hanging from the pot. It is an epiphyte from the Brazilian rainforest, growing on tree branches rather than in soil, which is exactly why it wants shade, airflow and a light mix. Completely spineless and pet safe, so it can hang anywhere without worry. At this size it is already a statement piece rather than a starter plant.

Your mistletoe cactus wants bright indirect light and will bleach and scorch in direct sun, so keep it back from a hot window. Water every other week, letting the top half of the mix dry out before you soak it thoroughly and let it drain. Because it is an epiphyte it hates heavy wet soil, so a very airy mix with plenty of perlite matters more than anything else. Repot only every three years, since it flowers better and looks fuller when the roots are a little cramped. Feed once a month in spring and summer with a diluted feed and stop entirely over winter. Thin, wrinkled stems mean it is thirsty, and yellowing or mushy patches mean the mix is staying too wet.
