(Swiss Cheese plant) Thai Constellation

Splashes of cream and speckles of white scattered across deep green leaves, like stars on a night sky: that's where the Thai Constellation gets its name. No two leaves look the same, so every new unfurling feels a bit like opening a present. At 60 cm tall in a 15 cm pot, this green friend is ready to take centre stage on a sideboard or in a bright corner of your living room. As it grows it develops those classic split, hole-filled leaves, and it climbs happily if you give it a moss pole. Give it a spot with plenty of light and it will repay you with new leaves that keep getting bigger and bolder.

Bright, indirect light is what brings out the creamy variegation, so a spot near an east or west facing window is perfect. Water about once a week, once the top few centimetres of soil have dried out, and let any excess drain away so the roots never sit wet. It's happiest in a warm room between 18 and 26 °C with a bit of humidity, so a regular misting or a humidifier nearby is welcome. Use a light, airy potting mix and repot every two years, or when roots start peeking out of the pot. Feed it every few weeks in spring and summer, and pause in winter. Keep it away from draughts and direct midday sun, which can scorch the pale parts of the leaves. This plant is toxic to cats and dogs, so place it out of reach of curious pets.
