(Mistletoe cactus) Bolivianum

A cactus that behaves nothing like a cactus, with long ribbed stems that tumble down in soft green ropes instead of standing to attention. Lepismium Bolivianum grows on trees in the wild, clinging to bark high in the canopy, which is why it wants shade and air rather than a scorching windowsill. In a hanging pot the stems keep lengthening and layering until you have a full green cascade. It is completely spineless and safe around pets and curious hands, so you can hang it anywhere. A low fuss green friend that quietly does all the work for you.

Your Lepismium likes bright indirect light and will scorch in harsh direct sun, so treat it more like a fern than a desert cactus. Water every other week and let the top half of the soil dry out first, then water thoroughly and let it drain completely. It stores water in those stems, so it copes fine if you forget a round, but standing water will rot the base fast. Use a light, airy mix with plenty of perlite and repot only every three years, since it likes being snug. Feed once a month in spring and summer with a diluted cactus feed and stop over winter. Shrivelled, wrinkled stems mean it is thirsty, while soft mushy ones mean you have gone too far the other way.
