(Bear's paw fern) Teyermanii Bunny

In a hanging pot this fern really comes into its own, because the silvery furry rhizomes creep right over the rim and dangle in the air like soft little paws. Above them sits a full crown of finely cut, glossy fronds that catch the light and give the plant a lacy, weightless look. At this size you get a properly mature specimen where the rhizomes have already started their wandering. It grows slowly and holds its shape, so it earns its spot for years rather than months. One of the most tactile green friends we know, and people always want to touch the paws.

Your bear's paw fern wants bright shade, so hang it near a window but out of any direct sun. Water weekly and keep the mix lightly moist, never soaking, because those rhizomes rot faster than the roots do. Mist the furry rhizomes regularly, they take up moisture directly and stay plump instead of shrivelling in dry air. Plant it in an airy mix with bark for fast drainage and repot every two years, always leaving the rhizomes sitting on top of the soil. Feed monthly from spring through summer and stop once growth slows down. If the paws start looking thin and brittle, the room air is too dry rather than the soil.
