Small, glossy leaves in a deep green, set so densely along the branches that the crown looks like a soft, leafy cloud. That's Ficus Danielle, a weeping fig that grows tall and slender rather than wide, which makes it a great fit for a bright corner next to the sofa or a spot by the window in your hallway. At 90 cm in a 21 cm pot it already has real presence, and picture how the light plays on those shiny leaves as the day moves on. In Southeast Asia its relatives grow into big, shady trees, so it's happiest on a permanent spot where it can settle in at its own pace. Give this green friend a little time and it will thank you with fresh, light green shoots every season. Ready to bring a bit of tree into your urban jungle?
Give it a bright spot with plenty of filtered light, a few steps back from a sunny window, because strong midday sun can scorch those glossy leaves. Let the top few centimetres of soil dry out before you water, then give it a good drink and tip away what collects in the saucer, since weeping figs don't like wet feet. It's happy in a steady, comfortable room between 16 and 26 °C, so keep it away from radiators, draughty doors and sudden blasts of cold air. Ficus Danielle is a creature of habit: if you move it or the light changes, a few leaves may drop, which is just its way of adjusting, so keep your routine steady and it will bounce back. Repot every two years in fresh potting soil with a little perlite for good drainage, and feed it every few weeks from spring till summer. The milky sap can irritate, so keep it out of reach of curious cats and dogs, and wipe the leaves with a damp cloth now and then so they keep their shine.
