Upright, ridged stems lined with tiny paired thorns, branching out like a candelabra: this one has real architecture. At 70 cm tall in a 19 cm pot, it brings a sculptural feel to a bright corner of your living room or office, and those green ribs catch the light beautifully through the day. It looks like a cactus, but it's actually a spurge from Eritrea, which explains the milky sap and the easygoing character. Over time it stretches upwards and adds new arms, so your living sculpture changes shape with the seasons. Give this green friend a sunny spot and a light hand with the watering can, and it will keep you company for years.
Give it the brightest spot you have, ideally by a south or west-facing window where it can soak up a few hours of direct sun. Those fleshy stems store water and energy, and plenty of light keeps it compact and sturdy. Let the soil dry out completely before you water again, roughly every two weeks in summer and about once a month in winter, because soggy roots are the one thing it really dislikes. Room temperature suits it well, anywhere between 15 and 28 °C, as long as you keep it away from cold draughts. Plant it in a free-draining cactus mix and repot every two years in spring, going up just one pot size. From spring to late summer you can add a little diluted cactus feed once a month, then let it rest in winter. Mind the milky sap, as it can irritate skin and eyes, so wear gloves when pruning and keep this green friend out of reach of pets and small children.

Everything about Euphorbia
The botanical name Euphorbia is named after Euphorbos, a famous Greek physician. Euphorbos wrote that one of the cactus-like Euphorbia (now called Euphorbia Obtusifolia) was used as a powerful laxative. In 1753, the botanist Carl Linnaeus first described the entire genus and gave it the name Euphorbia.
Euphorbias are great houseplants. They're not too picky, so they're perfect for both beginners and experienced plant parents. The only thing you need to remember is to put them in a bright spot. So why not give Euphorbia a try?
