Flat, wavy stems that zigzag downwards like little lightning bolts: that's the whole charm of this hanging cactus. The glossy, deep green lobes form a living curtain as soon as they spill over the rim of the pot. In the rainforests of southern Mexico it grows on trees and lets its stems dangle from the branches, so picture it in a hanging basket or high on a shelf in a bright corner of your living room. With a bit of luck you'll even see big, creamy white flowers that open in the evening and smell wonderful. This green friend looks like a sculpture, asks surprisingly little of you and has earned a spot in your urban jungle. Hang it where you can admire it from the sofa and let the stems do the talking.

Give it bright, indirect light, ideally near an east or north window, because the harsh midday sun scorches those flat stems. Water when the top few centimetres of soil feel dry, usually every week or two, since this jungle cactus stores a little water in its stems but hates sitting in soggy soil. Normal room temperatures between 15 and 27 degrees suit it well, and a little extra humidity makes it happy, though it isn't fussy. Pot it in airy, free-draining soil, for example cactus mix with a handful of bark, and repot about every two years when the roots fill the pot. Feed it once a month in spring and summer with diluted plant food and let it rest over winter. Shrivelled stems usually mean it's thirsty, while soft, yellowing ones tell you the watering can has been a bit too generous. Good news for pet owners: it's generally considered safe for cats and dogs.
