Here's a fun one: the sago palm isn't a palm at all. It's a cycad, a family of plants that has been around since the age of the dinosaurs, and you can see it in the stiff, glossy, deep green fronds that fan out from the trunk like a feathered crown. At around 110 cm in a 24 cm pot, this green friend is already a proper statement piece, yet it grows slowly, so it keeps its tidy shape for years. Picture it in a bright corner of your living room, where the fronds catch the light and cast sharp, graphic shadows on the wall. Roughly once a year a fresh flush of softer, lighter green fronds unfurls from the centre, and you'll find yourself checking on it more often than you'd admit. Give it a spot in your urban jungle and it'll keep you company for the long haul.
Give it the brightest spot you have, ideally near a south or west facing window with a few hours of direct sun, because that keeps the new fronds short, sturdy and deep green. Water when the top few centimetres of soil have dried out, roughly every other week, and let the excess drain away: the thick trunk stores water, so too much is far riskier than too little. Normal room temperatures between 12 and 28 °C suit it well, and it doesn't ask for extra humidity. Pop it in well draining potting soil with a bit of perlite, and repot only every three years or so, since slow growers like a snug pot. Feed it about once a month in spring and summer, and let it rest over winter. Don't worry if an older, lower frond turns yellow now and then, that's just the plant making room for new growth, so trim it off once it's fully brown. One gentle warning: every part of a sago palm is toxic to cats, dogs and people if eaten, so place it out of reach of curious nibblers.
