Glossy, feather-like fronds fanning out from a sturdy, bulbous base: this one looks like a palm that wandered out of a Japanese garden. Look closer and you'll notice each frond is made of dozens of narrow, leathery leaflets, and the new ones unfurl in soft, pale green before deepening to a dark, shiny shade. Picture it in a bright corner of your living room or hallway, where those crisp shapes cast graceful shadows on the wall. Here's a fun twist: it isn't a true palm but a cycad, an ancient group of green friends that grew alongside the dinosaurs. It grows slowly, adding a fresh crown of fronds once or twice a year, so it's a calm, steady presence in your urban jungle. Give it a sunny spot and a bit of patience, and it will stay with you for years.

Give it plenty of bright light, including a few hours of gentle direct sun, and the fronds will stay dark and compact. Water about every other week and let the top few centimetres of soil dry out in between, because the thick base stores water and dislikes a wet pot. It's happy at normal room temperature, ideally between 10 and 28°C, and doesn't need extra humidity, but keep it away from radiators and cold draughts. Use airy, well-draining potting soil and repot only every two to three years, as the roots like a snug fit. Feed it about once a month in spring and summer and pause over winter, when growth slows down. Trim off fronds that have turned fully brown and wipe the dust off now and then so the leaflets can shine. All parts are toxic to cats and dogs, so give it a spot out of reach of curious nibblers.
