Lucky plant, money tree, friendship tree: this jade plant has collected quite a few nicknames over the years. It's easy to see why, with its thick, glossy, oval leaves and sturdy branches that slowly grow into a miniature tree. Give it a spot on a bright windowsill or sideboard and it will add a calm, sculptural touch to your urban jungle. It's a gentle, slow grower that's happy to be a bit forgotten now and then. Treat it well and it may even surprise you with tiny star-shaped flowers one winter.

Jade plants love plenty of bright light, including a few hours of gentle sun, so a spot near a south or west facing window is ideal. Water about every other week and let the soil dry out almost completely in between, because the fleshy leaves store water for you. Wrinkled leaves mean it's thirsty, while soft, yellowing leaves usually mean it got too much. Normal room temperatures suit it well, and it's happiest between 12 and 28 degrees, away from cold draughts. Use a well draining cactus or succulent mix and repot every couple of years into a pot that's only slightly bigger. Feed lightly in spring and summer and let it rest in winter. Keep it out of reach of curious cats and dogs, as the leaves are mildly toxic.
