Look closely at the leaflets and you'll see where the name comes from: each one is wedge-shaped with a ragged edge, just like the tail of a fish. Caryota Mitis grows from several slender stems, so instead of one single trunk you get a light, clumping palm that feels properly tropical. Picture it in a bright corner of your living room, with the glossy green fronds arching out and throwing playful shadows across the wall. At around 100 cm tall in its 24 cm pot, it already has presence, and it keeps adding new fronds as the seasons go by. In the warm, damp forests of Southeast Asia it grows beneath taller trees, which is why it's happiest with bright, filtered light at home. Give this green friend a spot in your urban jungle and let it do what palms do best: make a room feel like a holiday.
Give it a bright spot with plenty of filtered light, a few steps back from a sunny window, because strong afternoon sun scorches those delicate leaflets. Water about once a week, as soon as the top 2 to 3 cm of soil feels dry, and let any excess drain away so the roots never sit in a puddle. It's a rainforest native, so it loves a warm, humid room between 16 and 28 °C, and a mist over the fronds now and then helps when the heating dries out the air. Brown leaf tips usually mean the air is too dry or the soil stayed dry for too long, which is easy to fix with a slightly different rhythm. Repot every two years in spring into fresh, airy potting soil, using a pot only a little bigger. Feed every few weeks in spring and summer, and let it rest over winter. Heads up: the fruits and sap can irritate, so keep it out of reach of pets and little ones.

Everything about Caryota
When we want a tropical landscape, vacation feelings and a white sand beach atmosphere, palms are the first thing that comes to mind! We mostly hear about Areca palm… but have you ever heard about Caryota palm? It's also known as the Fishtail Palm because its leaves resemble Fishtails. How cool is that?
Fishtail Palms are from warm and humid forests in Asia and northern Australia. They can grow super tall in the wild, up to 12 meters. But don't worry, as a houseplant, they're way shorter, reaching about 2 meters.
