The Beaucarnea Recurvata, lovingly nicknamed the ponytail palm, is instantly recognisable by its thick, water-storing trunk and the playful fountain of curly leaves on top. That swollen base is its secret superpower, letting it sail through a forgotten watering week without any drama. Native to the dry regions of Central America, it brings a touch of desert character to your living room. It grows slowly and steadily, becoming more sculptural with every year. Completely safe for cats and dogs too. An easygoing statement plant that practically takes care of itself.
Your Beaucarnea is about as easygoing as green friends get, thanks to the thick trunk that stores water like a reservoir. Give it the brightest spot you have, as it genuinely enjoys a few hours of direct sun. Water roughly once a month, letting the soil dry out completely in between, because overwatering is the only way to upset this one. Dry indoor air is no problem at all. Plant it in a well-draining, sandy mix and repot only every three years, as it likes a snug pot. Feed a few times during spring and summer. If the trunk ever feels soft, you have been too generous with the watering can. Bonus: it is completely safe for cats and dogs.
