(Pineapple plant) Amigo

Stiff, arching leaves with fine saw-edged margins, a tidy rosette, and in time a tiny pineapple on top: that's what makes this one so much fun to look at. It's a compact, ornamental relative of the pineapple in your fruit bowl, and at around 40 cm tall it fits happily on a bright windowsill or a sunny shelf. Picture it in a south-facing corner of your living room, where the light brings out its sharp, sculptural lines. Like all bromeliads it's built for warm, bright days, which is why it's so relaxed about a sunny spot. Give this green friend a place in your urban jungle and you'll get a little holiday feeling all year round, with a small fruit as a bonus if you're patient.

Give it as much bright light as you can, including a few hours of direct sun, and the leaves will stay firm and richly green. Water about every other week, once the top few centimetres of soil have dried out, because its roots dislike sitting in wet soil. It's a tropical at heart, so keep it between 15 and 28 °C and away from cold draughts. Plant it in a light, airy potting mix with some perlite, and repot only when the roots fill the pot, about every two years. Feed it once a month in spring and summer with a diluted plant food, and skip it in winter while it rests. Mind the spiky leaf edges when you move it, and if the tips turn brown, the air is probably too dry or it's been thirsty for too long.
