(Elephant ears) Zebrina

Look closely at the stems: they're striped like a zebra, and that's exactly where this Alocasia gets its name. Above them, big arrow-shaped leaves in glossy green catch the light, and at 75 cm tall this one fills a corner without any fuss. Picture it beside a bright window in your living room, with the leaves fanning out and the striped stems drawing your eye upwards. In the wild it grows in the shady forests of the Philippines, which explains why it loves warmth and a little humidity. It's a green friend with plenty of character, and it deserves a spot in your urban jungle.

Give it bright, indirect light, near a window where the sun doesn't hit the leaves directly, as that can scorch them. Water about once a week, as soon as the top few centimetres of soil feel dry, and let any excess drain away, because soggy roots are the one thing this Alocasia really dislikes. It comes from warm, humid forests, so keep it above 18°C and away from draughty windowsills, ideally in a group of green friends, which lifts the humidity around it a little. Use a light, airy potting mix and repot in spring when the roots peek out of the pot, usually every couple of years. Feed it every few weeks in spring and summer, and take a break in winter when growth slows. If a lower leaf turns yellow now and then, don't panic, it's simply making room for new growth. Keep it out of reach of pets and little ones, as the sap can irritate.
