(Japanese Maple) Palmatum Orange Dream

The Acer palmatum Orange Dream is a Japanese maple with finely cut, palmate leaves that unfold in glowing yellow-orange in spring, turn lime green in summer and finish in golden yellow in autumn. It reaches about 300 cm in height and 200-250 cm in width at maturity, with an elegant, slightly spreading habit. Give each plant about 2 square meters of space, as it shines best as a solitary specimen or in a large container. The tiny spring flowers are modest, but the foliage is the show and offers a soft light touch to shady corners. Perfect as a focal point on a patio, in a Japanese-style garden or in a mixed border. Seasonal changes affect the colour of the leaves when the plant arrives.

Plant the Acer in partial shade or a sunny spot sheltered from strong midday sun and drying wind, which can scorch the delicate leaves. It prefers humus-rich, well-draining soil that stays lightly moist but never waterlogged. Water regularly during dry spells, and more often when grown in a pot, as containers dry out much faster. Pruning is rarely needed; remove dead or crossing branches in late autumn or winter, never in spring when the sap is rising. This maple is fully hardy, but in a pot it is wise to protect the roots from hard frost with a wrap or a sheltered position.
