Thick, textured trunk below, a fountain of long, glossy, sword-shaped leaves above: that's a yucca in full swing. At 135 cm tall it gives a bright corner of your living room or office a calm, palm-like look, without any fuss. In its native Central America it's used to heat, drought and hours of sun, which is why it forgives you when the watering can sits idle for a week. Run a hand along the leaves (gently, the tips can be pointy) and you'll see why this green friend earns its place in your urban jungle. Give it a sunny spot and it will reward you with one new leaf after another.
Give it the brightest spot you have: a south or west facing window suits it well, and a few hours of direct sun are no problem. Let the soil dry out almost completely between waterings, so roughly every other week, because the thick trunk stores water and soggy roots are the one thing it really dislikes. Water a little less in winter, when growth slows down. It's happy at normal room temperature, from 15 to 30°C, and doesn't need extra humidity, so there's no need to mist. Repot every couple of years into airy, well draining soil (cactus mix works nicely) and feed it every few weeks in spring and summer. Turn the pot a quarter every now and then so it grows evenly towards the light, and wipe the leaves with a damp cloth to keep them glossy. Good to know: yucca is mildly toxic to cats and dogs, so keep nibblers away from the leaves.

Everything about Yucca
Yucca, also known as Yucca gigantea or elephantipes, is a loved houseplant from the Yucca family. It is the family's largest and most heat-tolerant species and can grow up to 9 meters tall in the wild! However, when grown indoors, it stays a more manageable size.
There are almost 50 species of Yucca trees and shrubs. Although Yuccas are sometimes called a cactus species, they are not cacti but perennial evergreen shrubs and trees in the plant family Asparagaceae. The natural range of the Yucca genus, the 49 species and 24 subspecies, covers a vast area of the American continent.
