(Chinese Wisteria) Sinensis

Chinese wisteria is a vigorous twining climber that hangs scented lilac blue racemes of 20-30 cm along the bare branches in May, just before the fresh green pinnate leaves unfold. Older plants develop thick, gnarled trunks and become a feature in their own right. On a strong support it reaches 8-10 m in height and 3-5 m across, so plant a single specimen against a house wall, over a pergola or on a sturdy frame. The flowers are heavy with nectar and bees work them constantly on warm May days. All parts of the plant are toxic if eaten, the seeds and pods in particular, so choose the spot with care where small children play.

Give it full sun, because a wall that catches the afternoon warmth gives the most reliable flowering. It needs deep, fertile soil that drains freely, so improve the planting hole well and avoid ground that stays wet in winter. Water in dry spells for the first few years while the root system establishes, and keep in mind that a young plant in a pot needs water far more often than one in open ground. Prune twice a year: shorten the long whippy side shoots to about five or six leaves in July or August, then cut those same shoots back to two or three buds in January or February. The plant is fully hardy, and only the earliest flower buds can be caught by a late frost in an exposed spot.
