(Star Jasmine) Star of Toscana

The Trachelospermum Star of Toscana is an evergreen climber with glossy, dark green leaves and clusters of white, star-shaped flowers with a sweet jasmine scent. It reaches about 300 cm in height and 100-150 cm in width at maturity when trained on a trellis, wire or fence. Plant 2 per metre of fence or trellis for a dense, green screen. The fragrant flowers appear from June to August and are visited by bees and other pollinators. It works beautifully against walls, on pergolas, and in large containers on a patio or balcony. Seasonal changes may affect whether the plant arrives with flowers.

Plant the Trachelospermum in a sunny or partly shaded position, sheltered from cold wind. It prefers humus-rich, well-draining soil that stays lightly moist, so avoid waterlogged roots. Water regularly during dry spells, especially when grown in a pot, as containers dry out much faster. Prune lightly after flowering in late summer and tie in the new shoots to guide the growth. Once established it is hardy down to about -10 °C, but protect young plants and potted plants in hard frost with fleece and a sheltered spot.
