(Star Jasmine) Jasminoides

Star jasmine is an evergreen twining climber with small, glossy dark green leaves that stay on the plant all year and take on a bronze tint in cold weather. From June to August it is covered in white, five petalled star shaped flowers with a sweet scent that carries several metres on a warm evening. Given wires or a trellis it climbs to about 3-5 m and spreads 1-2 m, so one plant per support is enough. Bees visit the open flowers, and the dense growth also makes a useful screen. It is at its best against a sheltered wall in sun or light shade, along a fence, or in a large pot by a seating area.

Plant it in sun or partial shade, ideally against a wall that shelters it from cold wind. It wants well drained soil that stays slightly moist, so dig in compost and avoid spots where water sits in winter. Water regularly in dry periods, especially in the first two years, and be aware that a plant in a pot dries out much faster and may need water every day in high summer. Prune lightly straight after flowering, shortening long shoots and thinning tangled growth so it stays flat against its support. It is not reliably hardy here, so mulch the base thickly, wrap the plant in fleece before hard frost, and move containers to a frost free but light place for the winter.
