Strelitzia Reginae is the queen behind the legendary bird of paradise flower: orange and blue blooms that look like exotic birds taking flight. Even without flowers her fans of blue-green, paddle-shaped leaves are a sight to behold. Give her plenty of light and a touch of patience, and she may crown your living room with that iconic flower. Your strelitzia is a light lover through and through: give her the brightest spot you have, where even some direct sun is welcome. Water weekly in the growing season, keeping the soil lightly moist, and a little less in winter. Her big leaves love an occasional shower or wipe to stay dust-free. Feed her in spring and summer, because all that fast growth costs energy, and repot every two years into a sturdy pot. Small tears in her leaves are completely natural, in the wild they help her catch the wind, and keep her out of reach of nibbling pets.
