(Mexican Feather Grass) Tenuissima

Stipa tenuissima forms a soft fountain of very fine, hair-thin green blades that move with every breath of wind. From summer into autumn it throws up creamy white flower plumes that fade to a warm straw colour and hold their shape for months. Expect about 50-60 cm in height and 40-50 cm in width, so 5-7 plants per m2 gives a flowing drift. The foliage stays green through mild winters, which keeps some structure in the border during the cold months. Plant it along a sunny path, in a gravel or prairie style border, or in a pot on a hot terrace.

Full sun is essential, because in shade the clump goes floppy and thin. It needs sharply drained soil and copes well with sand and poor ground, so lighten heavy soil with grit before planting. Once established it tolerates long dry spells, but water it through its first summer and keep an eye on pots, which dry out much faster than open ground. Comb the dead blades out with your fingers in early spring, or cut the whole clump back to about 10 cm in late winter before new growth starts. It is hardy in the garden, though wet winter soil is more of a risk than cold, so drainage matters most.
