Salvia nemorosa Ostfriesland forms a tight clump of dark green, slightly rough leaves with dozens of narrow, upright spikes of deep violet-purple flowers held well above the foliage. It grows to about 40-50 cm in height and 30-40 cm in width, and it dies back to the ground each winter. Plant 6-8 per square metre so the spikes knit together into a solid block of colour. The main flush runs from June into July, and if you cut it back it flowers again in late summer, drawing bees and butterflies both times. It is a classic partner for roses, ornamental grasses and any hot, sunny border, and it also holds up well in a large pot.
Ostfriesland needs full sun to stay upright, in shade the stems flop and the flowering is thin. Plant it in ordinary garden soil that drains well, it copes with the occasional dry spell but not with ground that stays wet in winter. Water during long dry periods in the first year and keep a closer eye on plants in pots, which run dry much faster than open soil. As soon as the first flush fades, cut the whole plant back by about half, right down to the fresh low leaves, and it will produce a second wave of spikes. Cut the old stems to ground level in early spring, just as the new rosette starts into growth. It is fully hardy and needs no winter protection.
