(Ming aralia) Fabian

Round, glossy leaves with a softly scalloped edge, stacked along slim, woody stems: that's Fabian in a nutshell. At 110 cm tall in a 27 cm pot it already looks like a little tree, so picture it in a bright corner of your living room, where the deep green leaves catch the light. The Ming aralia grows upright and airy rather than wide, which suits a spot where floor space is tight but you still want height. Every new leaf starts out a fresher, lighter green before settling into its darker shade, so you'll notice your green friend changing a little from week to week. Give it a bright spot and a bit of patience, and it grows into a graceful favourite in your urban jungle.

Give it a bright spot with plenty of indirect light, about a metre from a sunny window is perfect, because strong midday sun can scorch those glossy leaves. Water roughly every week or two, and let the top few centimetres of soil dry out first, as Fabian dislikes wet feet and soggy roots are the quickest way to leaf drop. It's a tropical at heart, so it's happiest in a steady room between 18 and 26 degrees with some humidity, away from draughts and hot radiators. A light misting now and then helps when the heating is on. Use an airy potting mix and repot about every two years, going up one pot size. Feed every few weeks in spring and summer and let it rest over winter. Yellowing leaves usually mean too much water, so ease off and it will bounce back, and keep it out of reach of curious pets, because the leaves can upset their tummies.
